Laura Vegni runs our cantina and also feeds us all throughout the vendemmia Laura lives in the neighbouring hamlet of Montefioralle, which looks down on Greve in Chianti. Her family has lived there for generations and, in one way or another, they have worked on the Montecalvi property for years. She is a vital part of our team, often described as the glue holding us all together.
*****
When did you start working at Montecalvi? What encouraged you to start this adventure?
I have been working for Montecalvi for more than ten years. It was a gradual collaboration, according to the needs of the company. Being curious about wanting to experiment and learn about what surrounds me, I tried to adapt to everything.
The passion for nature and vineyards, a place familiar to me since I was little, made the rest easier.
We experimented, facilitated by the beautiful panorama, with small tastings, sharing this precious product that the vines offer with tourists.
With the professionalism of the team and my willingness to experiment, the result was excellent.
Customers arrived silently, almost shyly and left satisfied and enthusiastic!
Could you describe to us what Montecalvi means to you? What makes it a special place?
Over the years, I have often used the expression “Magical” when describing Montecalvi. For me it is such a magical place that transmits serenity.
Even though we had to overcome some problems, little by little everything was resolved. I breathe a family atmosphere, as my aunt was born there, she was frequented by various relatives and by my recently engaged parents.
It was thanks to the large threshing floor, a meeting place for snacks, parties and even weddings.
A generation that almost no longer exists, but I can imagine from their stories told years ago, their joy in being all together, united and happy!
What are your best memories since Jim and Karen arrived in 2017?
I remember very well the first day I saw Jim’s beautiful family. It had been raining for several days and there was mud everywhere. Instead of being angry about this inconvenience, I still see the smile on their faces.
I immediately felt that they had fallen in love with Montecalvi, just as we love it, how beautiful!
Then I was struck by the great respect they had and still have for us who have worked there for many years and for the work we do. They have always given us full trust.
Often when I talk about them with my friends, they envy me, a work climate like this is a rare thing.
What is your favorite place here in Montecalvi? What makes it special?
I don’t have a favorite place in Montecalvi.
Every time I enter the gate and look at the view, I always say, what a WONDERFUL!
In every season, there is a wonderful view!
Which Montecalvi wine would you like to share with your best friend? Why?
The wine that I would definitely like to share with friends is Chianti Classico. It is a wine that has never been missing from our family table. It is the wine that I know most, appreciate and it comes naturally to me to offer it to my friends.
