Montecalvi is an organic estate.
The key principles of organic farming are rather familiar to us all as we seek to eliminate artificial chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides from our diet and our surrounding environment. It now really matters to many of us that the wine we choose to drink is organic. But it is not just that – organic farming is a way of thinking, a way of life.
It is important for us at Montecalvi to farm organically for all sorts of reasons. We are a family-owned estate. We live here and we drink the wine we make here and eat the food we grow here. It’s important to us to know that it is all free from harmful additives. We also wish to respect and preserve the soil and the environment around us as best we can – for us, of course, but also for the team who work at Montecalvi, all of our customers who visit and for those who will come after us at Montecalvi.
To be sure, farming organically is not without its (many) challenges – it requires diligence and, let’s say, a certain agility. You have to keep a constant eye on the vineyard and the weather to ensure you are on top of the many daily decisions that present themselves, and you have to forego the easy options that many growers have available to them to contend with what nature deals out. Sometimes you just have to grin and bear it!
Nevertheless, we feel that it is not only the right thing to do but that our wine is all the better for it. We think you will agree.
