Vermentino is an aromatic, crisp variety that thrives by the Italian sea.  Thought to have been introduced to the French island of Corsica in the 13th century, it has established itself well in north-western Italy, where it is also known as Roero, Favorita or Pigato depending on exactly where you are.  Interestingly, it appears to be one of the few indigenous white grapes that are happy in red wine country and this is particularly evident in Tuscany, Sardinia, Liguria and Piedmont.

Both mineral and vibrant, Vermentino features a selection of wild herb scents with a good measure of citrus as well as real tension on the palate and it is for this that we love it.  The perfect summer sip.

So, when we decided to add a white wine to our range, Vermentino was the obvious choice.  We carefully select the fruit from a trusted grower on the Tuscan coast, which we handpick and immediately deliver into the cellar. We extract flavour and complexity by macerating some of the fruit on its skins and then, post fermentation, leaving the wine on its lees for a short period of time.  This is not a frivolous Vermentino; as with all of the wines at Montecalvi, it is thoroughly thought through in order to deliver a glass that is as well suited to food as it is an aperitivo.
